Shincheonji Volunteer Group's Western Busan Branch conducts 3rd ‘Ocean Start Campaign’ to protect the seas
On the 19th April, the Western Busan Branch of Shincheonji Volunteer Group held the 3rd ‘Ocean Start Campaign’.
The Western Busan branch launched the Ocean Start campaign in February of this year, focusing on areas with large floating populations, with the goal of improving citizens' awareness of marine waste along with environmental clean-up activities. It is part of a drive towards achieving one of the UN's sustainable development goals on achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.
According to the international marine organisation Ocean Conservancy, the most commonly found litter in the ocean is cigarette butts, accounting for about 21% of all marine litter. Cigarette butt filters are mainly made of plastic, so when they naturally decompose, they are converted into microplastics that cause serious damage to the marine ecosystem.
To this end, 52 Masan branch members and 45 citizens gathered to participate in this campaign, A citizen who participated in the campaign was surprised to learn how picking up cigarette butts could contribute to protecting the sea.
An official from the Masan branch said that they hope that through this campaign, many citizens will become aware of the illegal dumping of cigarette butts.
