Briquettes are an essential item for low-income households to beat the cold during the winter.
Sokcho City has been recruiting households eligible for the briquette subsidy project since last summer, and applicants will receive briquette coupons that can be used like cash starting this month until April 30th 2024.
However, it is not easy to find volunteers to deliver briquettes to every corner.
Sang-bok Kim, Director of Sokcho Briquette Bank, recently explained, “(Briquette) donations are continuously coming in, but the number of delivery volunteers is decreasing every year, making it difficult to find volunteers.”
The Sokcho branch of Shincheonji Volunteer Group, which consistently provides a briquette service every year, has worked hard to deliver briquettes three times this month.
In the winter, the neighbourhoods of Jungang, Gyo, and Seorak in Sokcho City are home to particularly narrow and slippery roads, making it difficult for cars to gain access. The Sokcho branch delivered 3000 briquettes to six low-income households and one prayer centre.
Director Sang-bok Kim said, “I hope that Shincheonji Volunteer Group continues to work hard and serve as an opportunity for other volunteer groups to increase their participation in briquette delivery services.”
Volunteer member Doo-gyun Oh, who participated in the briquette service, said, “It was heart-warming to see the beneficiaries preparing hot tea and refreshments for the volunteers to help keep our bodies warm. I'm grateful I could be of some help to the residents.”
Member Mi-young Kang said, “It was a cold day, but it was an experience worth more than a 10,000 won ticket in these difficult times, with smiles blooming and words of positivity and strength being shared.”
Myeong-soon Choi, deputy director of the Sokcho branch of Shincheonji Volunteer Group, said, “The days are getting colder and there are so many places that need a warm hand during the year-end and New Year holidays, so if there is a place that needs a volunteer group, please submit your request at any time.”
