Shincheonji Volunteer Group Commits to Regional Vaccination Effort in Busan, Republic of Korea

On 21st June 2021, the Busan West branch of Shincheonji Volunteer Group responded to a request seeking volunteers that was issued by Saha District Volunteer Center in Busan,  Republic of Korea.

Six Shincheonji Volunteer Group members in Busan will now support the regional vaccination drive at the local vaccine centre every Monday on a weekly basis until the end of 2021. Volunteers will assume responsibility over parking, temperature checks of visitors, preparation of a preliminary checklist, ensuring social distancing measures are being met and monitoring any abnormal reactions post-vaccination.

This six-month commitment follows on from the previous vaccination effort by some 30 Shincheonji volunteers at the Covid-19 Vaccine Centre in Yeongdo district, Busan, in April earlier this year. A spokesperson for Shincheonji Volunteer Group in Daegu said, “Since February, all worship services and meetings have been held online and physical contact among congregants removed. After hearing of the challenges of quarantining among local businesses, we decided to make a united and concerted effort to help. We deeply regret the outbreak of COVID-19 that started in the Daegu branch and promise to continue shining the light to prevent the spread of COVID-19. We are taking initiative for the health and safety of local communities.”

Indeed, to aid development of treatment for COVID-19, a total of 3741 congregants of Shincheonji Daegu Church, who had contracted Covid-19 and recovered, donated their blood plasma over three rounds. Of this figure, 1561 donors donated their blood plasma more than twice. Mr. Jun-wook Kwon, Deputy Head of the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA), expressed his gratitude to donors in person back in November 2020, saying, "This blood plasma donation by believers of Shincheonji Church, who have now recovered from COVID-19, will make an indelible contribution to overcoming this pandemic and, eventually, eradicate it. We hope that the voluntary and active example set by Shincheonji Church members today will serve as an example to all citizens". Earlier this year, the KDCA confirmed that it is expected to secure blood plasma treatment by the end of 2021; a step that could potentially alleviate the suffering of many Covid sufferers in Korea and beyond.

Shincheonji Volunteer Group continues to put love for its neighbours into practice through various cultural and volunteer activities, having partnered with 72 national and international volunteer agencies to serve the marginalised communities in Korea, as well as improving road networks, implementing environmental clean-up campaigns, cooking and delivering homemade lunches and providing beauty services and mural painting.
