The Truth about Shincheonji Church's 'Patient 31' Amid a Sea of Rumours in South Korea's Coronavirus Pandemic

by - 16:01

Did a female congregant of Shincheonji Church of Jesus from Daegu, South Korea, nicknamed 'Patient 31' by Korean media outlets, refuse being tested for coronavirus?

On 9th February 2020, a woman was hospitalised after experiencing fever-like symptoms, and was misdiagnosed with a cold and sent back home. She then attended various Shincheonji Church gatherings and unknowingly infected fellow congregants. When her symptoms worsened, she underwent a more thorough examination on the 17th where she was advised to receive testing for coronavirus. She then went to Suseong district Health Center and tested positive.

'Patient 31' had not yet been diagnosed with coronavirus while attending church gatherings (and public gatherings were still permissible in South Korea). Moreover, Shincheonji Church and Chairman Lee did their best to cooperate with health authorities, even providing an exhaustive list of all its members and affiliated buildings in South Korea and abroad.
