Shincheonji Volunteer Group Donates 6000 Briquettes: "Seven Years of Steady Work"

by - 17:41

On 12th December 2020, Naewoe Press published an article entitled "Shincheonji Volunteer Group Donates 6000 Briquettes: 'Seven Years of Steady Work'". This is a translation of the article.

"Thank you for visiting me over the last seven years, not even forgetting this year."

An elderly grandmother runs outside in her tabi shoes, unable to mask her joy. Her neighbourhood used to be filled with briquette volunteers every winter, but as the spread of COVID-19 has forced social distancing measures to increase to 2.5 metres, the streets are now eerily quiet.

During the COVID pandemic, donations of briquettes have significantly declined compared to last year. On the 8th and 11th December 2020, Shincheonji Volunteer Group's Seoul East branch delivered a total of 3000 and 6000 briquettes, respectively, to under-privileged residents in the neighbourhoods of Jeongneung and Sanggye.

Shincheonji Volunteer Group, which has been distributing briquettes over the last seven years, has been carrying out this operation entirely by themselves. However, due to COVID-19 and subsequent social distancing measures, briquettes were delivered directly by briquette firms.

A resident of Jeongneung neighbourhood said, "In stark contrast to last year, this year has seen a serious shortage of volunteers due to COVID-19. Yet because there is no gas in our town, our area relies heavily on briquettes for winter. This is the first time Shincheonji volunteers have come to our area."

The resident also said, "With an average household usage of 1000 briquettes per month in winter, we need five months' supply. Not even half the amount of briquettes we received last year have so far arrived, so we thank you."

That day, Shincheonji Volunteer Group wrapped 10 KF94 respirator masks, together with briquettes, for residents.

A Shincheonji Volunteer Group representative, who visits this neighbourhood yearly, said, "When I used to deliver briquettes in person to crowds filled with residents, I felt so much warmth and compassion. It's such a shame we can't deliver the way we used to. I hope that the general donation of briquettes will increase in light of COVID-19 so that our neighbours can find warmth amid a bitter winter."
