In a world increasingly driven by technology, no one should be left behind. That’s the message behind the Shincheonji Church's latest initiative to bridge the digital divide for elderly citizens in Seoul, South Korea.
Hands-On Smartphone Education for Seniors
On 17th May, the Shincheonji Hwagok Church hosted a 'Smartphone Usage Education' programme for seniors aged 60 to 80 in Seoul.
With over 200 seniors participating, the session was centred on hands-on training, designed to strengthen digital literacy and boost confidence in everyday smartphone use.
Curriculum Designed for Real-Life Use
The programme offers a step-by-step guide tailored to the needs of digital beginners, including:
- Learning the basics – turning the phone on and off, unlocking the screen
- Sending text messages and making phone calls
- Taking photos and accessing the gallery
- Using real-life apps like KakaoTalk, public transit apps, weather forecasts, and YouTube
More Than Just Tech Support
This initiative is not just about teaching technology—it’s about connection, compassion, and community.
One participant, 74-year-old Ms. Byeon from Sinwol-dong, shared:
“I found the login process the most difficult when accessing the internet or using apps. But this training was a time to gain confidence by following along step-by-step.”
The lecture was led by Lecturer Yeon-gyu Chu, who has accumulated many years of experience in digital education and smartphone usage training for the elderly.
A Model of Social Impact
Looking ahead, Shincheonji Church plans to expand the programme by partnering with local welfare centres and municipalities, offering on-site mobile education upon request.
This is just one of many efforts by Shincheonji Church to build a more connected, caring, and inclusive society.
