Shincheonji Church: "Blood Donations Will Continue”

[Cheonji Ilbo = Reporter Lee Soo-jeong] A patient in their 70s who was in critical condition as a result of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19) received blood treatment and was cured. He finally tested negative.

This is the first global case of a cure following administration of blood treatment. Accordingly, blood therapy is emerging as a new hope for severely ill patients with COVID-19 who have relied solely on drug repurposing because of the lack of a clear treatment.

'Mr. A' (78), who was diagnosed with COVID-19 in September, had been hospitalised at Chilgok Gyeongbuk National University Hospital for treatment. He was given remdesivir and dexamethasone, which are used to treat critically ill patients, but there was no improvement. According to Seoul Economic Daily, his condition deteriorated to the point of having to resort to use of a respirator.

Therefore, as a last resort, medical staff applied to the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety for approval of the use of a blood plasma drug by GC Pharma (006280) for therapeutic purposes. Approval for therapeutic use is a system that allows the use of clinical trial drugs that have not yet been approved for the treatment of critical patients.

When medical staff administered drug treatment to Mr. A, his body temperature returned to normal, and his oxygen demand decreased significantly. Over about 20 days, Mr. A's condition steadily improved. Eventually, after two months in quarantine, he was released after receiving a final negative test on the 18th November.

COVID-19 blood treatment is concentrated and purified at a high concentration by extracting the plasma of a recovered COVID-19 patient to find an agent that can be used for therapeutic purposes. Therefore, securing the blood plasma of those who have recovered from COVID-19 is of paramount importance to the production of a therapeutic agent.

In this regard, Shincheonji Church of Jesus, The Temple of the Tabernacle of the Testimony (Shincheonji Church of Jesus; Chairman Man Hee Lee) carried out their third group blood plasma donation for the development of blood treatment at Daegu Athletics Promotion Center for three weeks from 16th November - 4th December 2020.

A total of 3639 Shincheonji Church congregants, who recovered after being infected with COVID-19, participated in their third group blood plasma donation. Among them, 2040 donors donated their plasma, excluding those who were unable to do so (1599 people) due to existing health or drug use.

As a result, a total of 3741 Shincheonji Church congregants in Daegu have donated their blood plasma through three group donations, and individual donations. Among them, 1561 (41.7%) congregants who completed two or more plasma donations showed a high participation rate.

The largest donors gave seven times (two congregants) for both group and individual donations. In particular, there was a large number of congregants who participated in plasma donation after suffering the loss of the death of their parents from COVID-19.

In addition, most congregants took annual leave or a half/whole day off work to participate in plasma donation.

32 year old Ms. Young-rae Cho (Nam district, Daegu), who is the biggest plasma donor, said, "I learned that donating blood plasma was necessary while watching the news, so I decided I'd do so whenever the opportunity arose."

She added, “After being infected with COVID-19, I developed health problems that made daily life very difficult, so after receiving outpatient treatment for two months, I told myself there mustn't be more cases like mine.”

Jun-Wook Kwon, Deputy Head of the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, visited the blood plasma donation site and encouraged donors, saying, "The blood plasma donation made by believers in Shincheonji Church, who have now recovered from COVID-19, will make an indelible contribution to overcoming this pandemic and, eventually, eradicate it. Their heart and actions will serve as an example to all."

Shincheonji Church of Jesus volunteered to cover their own costs for all medical and logistical operations so that large-scale blood plasma donation could proceed smoothly. In addition, they refused the transportation allowance fee of 200,000-300,000 Korean Won that was eligible to plasma donors.
