In the midst of a prolonged economic recession in South Korea, with the highest existing business closure rate (9.0%) since the Korea Employers Federation (KEF) began compiling statistics in 2006, citizens in Yeosu City joined forces to launch a campaign designed to help small business owners and the self-employed and ultimately revitalise the local economy.
After finishing the morning service on the 2nd, roughly 1200 churchgoers from Shincheonji Yeosu Church gathered in small groups and visited 30 local restaurants they had made a group reservation for for lunch.
Through the campaign, the members of the Shincheonji Yeosu Church did not simply promote consumption, but those who participated in the meal directly shared photos and reviews of the restaurants they visited on social media so that more people could visit and use the stores.
Yang-won Kim (60s, male), who has been running a restaurant in Hwajang neighbourhood for over 20 years, said, “The economy was so bad that we needed to increase sales right away. I am so grateful that so many people visited our store, and thanks to you, I was able to take a breather.”
Ms. Ra-hee Lee (30s), who participated in the campaign, said, “It broke my heart to see the small shops in our neighbourhood disappear. That’s why I decided to participate this time.”
