Shincheonji Church of Jesus, a global church with branches in more than 100 countries, recently kicked off its first blood donation drive of the year in Cape Town on 21st February. Held in partnership with the South African National Blood Service (SANBS), the initiative was part of the church’s ongoing commitment to community service and development.
The blood drive was a success, attracting both experienced and many first-time donors. The latter credited their involvement in Shincheonji’s volunteer work with helping alleviate their fears about donating blood.
Shincheonji Church of Jesus has a history of promoting blood donation, and even holds a Guinness World Record for having the most people sign up as blood donors online within 24 hours.
In 2024, over 1300 members in South Africa participated in various blood donation drives hosted by the church, contributing more than 900 litres of blood - enough to potentially save up to 2700 lives. This was a significant result given the fact that only 1% of South Africans are regular donors.
Looking ahead, Shincheonji Church of Jesus is committed to making a meaningful impact in society through regular blood donation initiatives in partnership with various blood services.
While Shincheonji Church of Jesus was established in 1984 in Seoul, South Korea, the South African branch was established in 2013 in Cape Town, South Africa. The international church has branches in more than 100 countries. In Southern Africa, there are branches in 5 provinces of South Africa as well as in Zimbabwe and Namibia.
