Shincheonji Volunteer Group brings on 'school nostalgia' among people with disabilities in Seodaemun, Seoul

✦ Breaking down barriers between people with disabilities and people without

✦ Wearing school uniforms, dalgona (sweet), massaging, and more

[Cheonji Ilbo = Reporter Min-hee Kim] The Seodaemun (Seoul) branch of Shincheonji Volunteer Group (managed by Jung-soo Lee) is providing palliative therapy to people with disabilities, as they reminisce about their school days with better health.

The Seodaemun Branch of Shincheonji Volunteer Group held its '8th Visiting Health Doctor: Emotions and the Five Senses Tour' project on the 13th April. The project is a 'mental wellbeing service' purposed to break down physical and mental  barriers between people with disabilities and those without, through open communication and empathy.

The Seodaemun branch invited four people with disabilities - including Chairman Sang-hyun Kim of Disabled People's Association for Transportation (Mapo District branch) - and one person without, and volunteers dressed in school attire to bring on the nostalgia of guests' younger days through dalgona (Korean sweet made with melted sugar and baking soda), knitting, and an outdoor excursion at Jingwan Temple.

Participants said, It was frustrating being at home every day, but I went out today and had a great time. When I wore my old school uniform and took pictures, it reminded me of my school days and felt like I was re-living my childhood.

Meanwhile, the 'Visiting Health Doctor' initiative is one of the core projects that Shincheonji Volunteer Group has been working on since 2011. The project was initially purposed to benefit foreign workers in Korea and the underprivileged who could not receive adequate medical services due to language barriers and poor environments.
