The Global Quest for a Vaccine in 2021
Many countries have started various vaccination campaigns and South Korea is also expected to start vaccinating soon. Questions over the reliability and various side effects of various vaccines have surfaced and research is ongoing for a fully trusted one. There is little doubt that vaccines are imperative in teaching our bodies how to fight the virus.
At present, the three leading vaccine manufacturers are Pfizer/BioNtech, Moderna, and Oxford/AstraZeneca. Among them, Pfizer and Moderna have developed RNA vaccines which injects a very small amount of the virus' genetic coding into the body so that it learns to produce some of the coronavirus and push the body to build a defence to it.
The Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine is a little different. The Oxford vaccine is perhaps the most straightforward to use among the three because it can be stored in the refrigerator. The Janssen vaccine uses the same technology as Oxford, but Oxford requires two vaccinations, whereas Janssen only needs one.
There is also a vaccine named Novavax and several vaccines developed in China. Of all these choices of vaccine, there is worry over which is most reliable and trusted and the restriction on peoples' freedom in choosing between them. Of course, one can refuse, but then may have to wait until the final round to receive a vaccine.
There is also the question of whether a vaccine can stop the spread of coronavirus? No one knows. At present, it seems like the development of a cure is more urgent than a vaccine, but there seems to be no news about the cure so there seems little hope for the eradication of the virus.
