"The power to overcome COVID-19 lies in tolerance, love and unity and we will continue to donate plasma for the development of a treatment"

As a second domestic outbreak of COVID-19 erupts throughout South Korea, global media outlets continue to report on the recent blood plasma donation by 1700 recovered members of Shincheonji Church in Daegu. This donation was made for the purpose of helping the Korea Center for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC) find a vaccine to this indiscriminate virus.

Nigerian-based news agency, The Sunrise, is the latest to publish a report on the second and most recent blood plasma donation by 1371 Shincheonji Church members in Daegu where the outbreak had begun (full extract below). Earlier this week, the BBC reported on Shincheonji Church's donations at a time when many hardline evangelical churches in Seoul, South Korea, refuse to be tested for coronavirus and continue to hold church services in spite of a surge in cases - many of whom belong to the ultra conservative church.

Immediately following the outbreak in February 2020, Shincheonji Church ceased all gatherings to prevent the further spread of the virus, its chairman Man Hee Lee bowed to the floor twice giving a public apology for the outbreak that followed 'patient 31', and 4000 members expressed their willingness to donate their convalescent plasma which, at $35-40,000/ml (and at 500ml donation each), would be valued at roughly $83 billion; an unprecedented donation that has the potential to save millions of lives.

The initial blood plasma donation was made by 628 members of Shincheonji Church Daegu and was broadcast as follows:-

500 cured congregation members of Shincheonji Daegu Church Donate Blood Plasma (July 13th-17th)

At two consecutive briefings on 27th and 29th August, Mr. Jun-wook Kwon, Deputy Director of the Korea Center for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC), thanked Shincheonji Church for their contribution. A spokesperson for Shincheonji Church responded, "We will continue to work closely with the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to make every effort to defeat COVID-19."

The mass donation, which is not yet half what Shincheonji Church intends to give, was encouraged by Chairman Lee who, in a letter dated August 25th, wrote, “Let us lead the effort in plasma donation so that the blood (plasma) of the congregation members who have been atoned for their sins by the blood of Jesus can be used for overcoming COVID-19 for the citizens and the country.”

Since the surge in cases following the case 'patient 31' in mid-February, Shincheonji Church has remained penitent for the harm and worry caused to Korean citizens. To this end, an online prayer meeting was attended by over 200,000 congregation members of Shincheonji Church during their Wednesday service on 2nd September 2020 where prayer was given for the government, KCDC and medical staff, infected patients and people who have lost loved ones to this virus, a swift end to COVID-19 and completion of a vaccine, and a call for repentance and forgiveness for any deliberate or undeliberate sin caused by Shincheonji Church members. Shincheonji Church clearly recognises that compassion, love and unity are desperately needed in order to overcome this crisis.

What follows is the most recent report by The Sunrise, dated 8th September 2020

1,018 2nd group of Shincheonji Church Complete plasma donation (The Sunrise, Nigeria)

The Shincheonji Church of Jesus, the temple of the tabernacle of the testimony completed the 2nd group plasma donation for the development of the Corona 19 treatment at the Daegu Athletics Promotion Center.

The Church held a seven-day group plasma donation at the Daegu Athletics Promotion Center from August 27 to September 4.

A total of 1,371 members of the church in Daegu, Shincheonji, who were infected with corona19, participated in the second group plasma donation, and 1,018 of them completed the donation, except for some who were unable to donate plasma due to health or chronic diseases.

Earlier, a total of 628 people have already donated plasma through the first group and individual donation.

As a result, the total of 1,646 members of the Shincheonji Daegu Church completed plasma donation, and 340 (20.7%) participated in plasma donation more than twice, and 312 people (18.9%) actually completed more than two donations.

In order to facilitate the large-scale plasma donation of 1,000 people, Shincheonji Church of Jesus volunteered the entire operation, including temperature check and list preparation for thorough prevention, hand sanitizer installation, shuttle bus operation, and donation guidance.

In addition, during the second round of plasma donation following the first round, they did not get support about 200,000 won to 300,000 won (200-300 US dollars) of transport fee. This is to show appreciation for the free corona 19 test and treatment in Feb, and March conducted by the government and to ease the burden of taxpayers’ money.

Given that it takes three to four hours per person to be in line waiting, testing, and plasma donating, most of the members participated in the donation as they took half of their work vacation or a day. There were many members who were disqualified in the first round and came again to try one more time.

A spoken person of Shincheonji Daegu Church explained, “The fact that we could join in saving someone’s life through blood donation was a great encouragement to the members who were already cured, and they were able to overcome the intimidated and difficult feelings that they went through at the time of the infection.”

“Thanks to the citizens who gave us a lot of encouragement, the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Korean National Red Cross, the Daegu-Gyeongbuk Blood Center, the GC Green Cross, and the gym, we were able to donate blood plasma safely” He said.

The spokesperson added” We sincerely thank you all, We realize that the power to overcome Corona 19 lies in tolerance, love and unity and we will continue to donate plasma for the development of the treatment.”
