Roughly 50,000 people attended
an Open Bible Seminar hosted by Shincheonji Church of Jesus, The Temple of the
Tabernacle of the Testimony (hereon ‘Shincheonji church’), from May-June 2019 in
the Republic of Korea. In a climate of false news published about Shincheonji
church, the purpose of these seminars was not only to teach the correct
understanding of the Bible but to resolve peoples’ misunderstandings about
Shincheonji church. The series of seminars - held throughout the country - explored
Biblical themes including its 6000-year history, the identities of the tree of
life and tree of the knowledge of good and evil, the signs of the second
coming, the new covenant required for believers to keep today, the book of
Revelation and answers to 24 questions posed about life by the former president
of Samsung, Mr. Lee Byung-chul.
Groundless accusations have
been made against Shincheonji church by the Christian Council of Korea (CCK),
which has thrown the religious world into confusion through its dissemination
of false news. While it labels Shincheonji church a ‘cult’, the CCK uses the media
in Korea to disguise its own evil intentions. It is not a religious, but
criminal, organisation which is responsible for the deaths of two women who
refused to convert and accept their Presbyterian teachings through a ‘coercive
conversion’ programme (see previous articles for more information). Pastors
affiliated to the CCK in Korea have been sentenced for roughly 12,000 crimes including
fraud, burglary, forgery, defamation, drink-driving, arson and sexual assault from
2008-2018. Within the last four years alone, close to 550 pastors in Seoul have
been sentenced. This is the disturbing reality of mainstream Christianity in
Korea today. In contrast, not a single accusation made against Shincheonji
church by the CCK has been upheld by a court of law. In fact, the Supreme Court
ruled in favour of Shincheonji church after CCK broadcast a false documentary entitled
“Those who fell into Shincheonji”.
In spite of the CCK’s slander,
Shincheonji church has sent invitations to the CCK to hold a public debate on
the Bible to address the public’s misunderstandings about Shincheonji church
and its teachings. Negotiations between the Christian Council of Cheonan and
Shincheonji church’s Cheonan branch began, but quickly broke down as the
intentions of the former was to use external commentaries to disprove the teachings
of the latter while the latter uses the Bible alone to teach the truth of the
Bible.
The fact that 50,000 people -
of all faiths and none - came to listen to the word taught at Shincheonji church’s
Open Bible Seminar shows peoples’ hunger for ‘truth’ in an era of increasing
secularisation. The majority of participants registered for further study at one
of Shincheonji church’s 300 Zion Christian Mission Centers, which provides free
Bible-teaching. Zion Christian Mission Centers are being established all over
the world for anyone hungry to understand the Bible in-depth.
Shincheonji church, Cheonan
branch, keeps its doors open for dialogue with the Christian Council of Cheonan.
