Tens of thousands of people have been flocking to listen to the teachings of the Bible at Shincheonji Church of Jesus, The Temple of the Tabernacle of the Testimony (hereon 'Shincheonji church'). Shincheonji church's Bible-teaching department, Zion Christian Mission Center, registered a record 20,000 students across hundreds of its global Mission Centers in 2018. Why are so many people going there?
The causes of this phenomenon are a hunger for spiritual truth in an age of unprecedented secularism and material prosperity, combined with a sharp decline in church attendance - particularly in South Korea. People have become increasingly disillusioned with the established church in Korea as 12,000 sentences have been given to pastors affiliated to the Christian Council of Korea (CCK) for crimes including burglary, drink-driving and rape since 2008. It is a shocking reality.
What distinguishes Zion Christian Mission Center from any other Bible-teaching institution is that it seeks to create 'Bible-centred' believers through an intensive six-month programme. This includes a 300-question exam that seals students' understanding of the Bible. Teachings are fully Bible-based and emphasis is made on caring for students' spiritual wellbeing and in providing transparency of the Mission Centers' monthly financial reports.
Moreover, to help spread the truth about Bible teachings and to resolve any misunderstandings about Shincheonji church made by the established church, Shincheonji church recently held a nationwide Open Bible Seminar series that was attended by a staggering 50,000 people of all faiths and none, in South Korea. These seminars freely taught the true meaning of Genesis and Revelation and the new covenant that believers are expected to keep today according to the Bible. Shincheonji church is providing people the opportunity to verify the correct teachings of the Bible for themselves and even offering to send its lecturers to the established church in Korea to help congregation members verify the truths for themselves.
Shincheonji church continuees to put its love of God and neighbour into action through its 200,000-strong Shincheonji Volunteer Group, which freely serves the needs of people throughout Korea.
