On 24th October 2020, Cheonji Daily published an article in Korean entitled, “Imprisoned in a Countryside Pension to Undergo Coercive Conversion because of My Life of Faith at Shincheonji Church of Jesus". This is a translation of that article.

The once unknown term 'forced conversion' became a serious topic in South Korean society in 2008 after Pastor Yong-Sik Jin sent Mrs. Baek-Hyang Jeong to a psychiatric ward in order to carry out forced conversion. He was later punished by law. At that time Pastor Jin, who headed up the Heresy Investigation Committee of the Christian Council of Korea (CCK), forcibly converted believers who belonged to denominations of the established church labelled so-called 'cults', including Mrs. Jeong’s. Such cases began to rise in leaps and bounds. At first, pastors carried out ‘forced conversion’ (also termed ‘deprogramming’ or ‘coercive conversion’) themselves, but later altered their approach. Today, forced conversion pastors instil fear and anxiety in the families of Shincheonji Church members by slandering Shincheonji Church, so that families are deceived into believing their beloved child, wife or parent has fallen into a ‘cult’ and are prone to making immediate hasty decisions. In order to prevent this, forced conversion programs tainted by illegal practices that include kidnap, confinement and violence become the 'last straw' to save the family. In 21st century South Korea, where issues around religious freedom have been brought to the limelight, ‘forced conversion’ continues unabated. This paper intends to serialise the distressing appeals of victims who have had to endure human rights violations and oppression through forced conversion, and are otherwise unable to voice their plea.

Siblings forced outside their home for conversion
Kidnapped, cuffed and bound
Violence led to family breakdown

[Cheonji Ilbo = Reporter Kang Soo-kyung] The majority of forced conversion programmes leave indelible scars that do not fade. Victims of forced conversion often experience a recurrence of abuse by their own families following contact with conversion pastors.

Ms. Ju-hee Song (pseudonym) of Buk district, Gwangju city, suffered violent language and abuse from her parents because of her faith at Shincheonji Church. After two failed attempts by Ms. Song's parents to drag her onto the conversion programme, their third attempt, cunningly devised together with a conversion pastor, achieved their will  Such acts led to a complete breakdown between parents and children. What follows is a full account of Ms. Song's testimony.
        =============================================================
Greetings,
My name is Ju-hee Song, from Buk district, Gwangju Metropolitan City. I am a law-abiding citizen of the Republic of Korea - a country which guarantees 'freedom of religion' - and also a believer in God.

In March 2010, a fellow sister who shared the same faith as I underwent forced conversion. She called my mother's church directly and informed them that my younger sister and I were members of Shincheonji Church. Before I could speak openly with my family, my faith had suddenly been made known.

My parents already had a negative perception of Shincheonji Church. Now they deprived me of my cell phone and ordered me to return home no later than 5pm daily.

One morning, at dawn, I was suddenly awoken to beatings and curses from my father. He had never previously sworn at me. He was furious and even lifted a chair to threaten me. He forced me to attend early morning prayer at the church he and my mother attend.

During that period, my parents had been receiving ongoing consultation from a conversion pastor. Through acquaintances, my sister had learnt in June 2010 that my parents were busy making preparations for me to undergo the coercive conversion programme.

I confronted my parents about this and they confessed that they had indeed made such preparations for me to undergo forced conversion. They contacted Shincheonji Church, admitted what they had done and said that they would stop immediately. So my sister and I returned home, and continued to live with Mum and Dad as we had done before.

However, my parents made preparations for coercive conversion for the second time in winter. We managed to find a way out after their plan was leaked to an acquaintance.

My mother felt no remorse for her lies and was prepared for me to be kidnapped as part of this 'programme'. My sister and I left home to live independent lives and sometimes visited our parents outside.

During the winter and summer breaks of 2011, my parents had completed preparations for us to undergo forced conversion.

My younger sister celebrated her university graduation in February 2012. As my father was very fond of the university, he asked me to attend the graduation ceremony. We did so joyfully, taking several family photos. Following celebrations, we got into my father's car and made our way for a family meal.

At first, my father seemed to be driving towards the intended destination, but after a while he stopped at a remote spot and shouted, “Grab them!” My sister and I were cuffed and bound with rope tied round our arms and legs. Regardless of our cries and pleas, it all fell on deaf ears.

We stopped off outside a remote pension (lodging) in Hwasoon city, Jeollanam province, where we were dragged outside the car with our mouths taped shut and arms held tightly to prevent us from fleeing. My sister and I had become victims of kidnap. We pleaded with the owner of the pension to intervene, but the owner turned a blind eye. My parents clearly had no intention of letting us go anywhere until we had completed this forced conversion programme.

No one paid any attention to what we had to say about our faith in Shincheonji Church. It was deemed a mental illness that required repeated treatment. My mother continued to wail aloud, insisting that her health had deteriorated because she was unable to eat.

By day three, I was exhausted from stress and I succumbed to forced conversion. I was taken to 'Pastor A's' church to begin the coercive conversion programme. As soon as my sister and I arrived, 'pastor A' began meting out curses against Shincheonji Church with lies. My sister and I refuted every one of his false and groundless accusations.

'Pastor A', who had vehemently spewed lies for three hours, told my father that my sister and I were now so immersed in the faith that it would be near-impossible for us to renounce our beliefs and convert. My Dad pleaded with ‘pastor A’, but was assured that nothing could be done. So, on day four  of the kidnap, we returned back home to Gwangju. My younger sister and I had refused to be 'converted' and my parents were devastated.

We were assured that our family would return to living in mutual peace. We would regularly return home weekly to eat and restore broken relationships yet were unaware of their plan to initiate yet another coercive conversion programme.

Then, just five months after the forced conversion attempt in July that year, my parents had arranged for coercive conversion proceedings on a Sunday, when we usually visited and gathered for a family meal. They thought it would be too difficult to convince us to consent to the programme, so they brought our aunt and uncle along. This would leave my sister and I with unimaginable heartbreak and an inability to ever return home.

After a regular family meal at my parents', I took some rest when, all of a sudden, I saw my aunt and uncle rush in to the room and, without prior mention, violently beat my sister and I. My mouth was wrapped tightly with blue tape, and my hands and feet cuffed and bound with rope. My younger sister was held down tightly and my uncle smacked her head on the floor so many times as she bit his arm in defence.

My family even tried to stop him. My younger sister was suffocating so my uncle let her head up and told her, "If you scream again, I'll kill you." My sister and I had been taken hostage in our own parents' home. Our neighbours eventually heard our cries and reported it to the police.

Nevertheless, we were dragged into a car which didn't even belong to my father. My sister and I were taken to a remote studio where we were detained separately. I felt so betrayed by my parents.

Whenever I tried to escape forced confinement inside the studio, I was sworn at and violently treated. Due to extreme exhaustion from ceaseless violence and profanities in confinement, I eventually succumbed to coercive conversion; an all-day experience which lasted from 10am-6pm. I sought any opportunity to escape. By day 25, I managed to open the door of the room I was imprisoned in and, even though my every step was monitored, I was set free and ran away.

My father talked with the conversion pastor throughout our detainment, receiving feedback such as, "they should stay here a little longer", and, "tell the police this and that".

When I returned to Gwangju, I went to the police station to report a case of kidnap, but the police discouraged me from doing so, saying I would have to sue my own parents if I did so.

Even though the conversion programme has since ended, I am still looked down upon by my family and am not welcome home as long as I continue my life of faith at Shincheonji Church. Family trust has completely broken down with irreversible damage.

It begs the question: is it right for these perpetrators, who hide behind religion, to use parents as instruments to carry out human rights abuses whilst evading legal punishment?

“Imprisoned in a studio for 25 days"
"Having refused to convert by the end of the 8-month programme, I was dragged to a psychiatric ward"
"Religious abusers are pastors who must be punished by law”

[Cheonji Ilbo = Reporter Kang Soo-kyung] The truth about the identity of a perpetrator and victim can be easily reversed by the majority. If, for example, a significant number of perpetrators collaborate, a victim can quickly become labelled as the perpetrator, with the responsibility reversed 180 degrees. Such a phenomenon is rife within the forced conversion programme.

The true perpetrators, who mete out all sorts of curses and slander on their victim, have no regard for human rights. Even though they engage in countless illegal activities including kidnap, confinement, and violence, they turn a blind eye to their wrongdoing.

Indeed, they claim that their actions are what God desires, but this is based on their own illogical reasoning. Moreover, if they fail to successfully 'convert' their victim after instilling their doctrine, they deem the victim ‘psychotically insane’.

In line with previous testimonies, this testimony is written by another victim of forced conversion named Ms. Seong-hee Choi (pseudonym) of Buk district, Gwangju Metropolitan City, who testifies to the horror of her experience undergoing coercive conversion carried out by two leading pastors. What follows is a full account of Ms. Choi's appeal.
        =============================================================
To the Reader,
I am writing my testimony to inform the government of this country, the public and the judicial system about human rights abuses carried out under the coercive conversion programme and to urge that conversion pastors be punished by law.

The Constitution of the Republic of Korea guarantees 'freedom of religion' (Article 20), yet the reason why these brutal coercive conversion programmes continue unabated is because conversion pastors instigate families to kidnap, imprison and assault their own child, sibling or parent; thereby evading the law.

What conversion pastors tell families of victims who practise their faith at Shincheonji Church is, "Your family has now fallen into a serious cult. If you allow this to continue, it will ruin your life.” To prevent such an aftermath, conversion pastors counsel the family to swiftly abduct and imprison their loved one, as families are instilled with all-consuming worries and fears. They act without hesitation.

In March 2007, I became a victim of the Presbyterian ‘Heresy Investigation Committee’ 'conversion counselling' programme operated by a money-hungry pastor named 'Pastor A'. I was detained against my will for 25 days with my cell phone robbed.

I was the only person taken in for 'conversion counselling' at that particular studio and was treated as a psychopath, undergoing threat, abuse and manipulation over ten hours a day, from dawn until dusk. It was closer to systematic torture than any form of 'counselling' and I suffered serious domestic violence. After having heard false personal attacks about Shincheonji Church by a conversion pastor, my family had completely changed.

After refusing to accept their doctrine and be ‘converted’, 'Pastor A' advised my family to take me to a psychiatric ward because their daughter was now “suffering from paranoia”.

I had reassured my family that I would no longer attend Shincheonji Church, but they had already been deceived into believing that the coercive conversion programme was the only solution. That’s when I underwent coercive conversion by another conversion pastor named 'Pastor C'. Having refused to be converted, I spent a further eight months under the command of 'Pastor C' where I was forced to undergo the conversion programme yet again.

Since the age of 26, these pastors have wrought destruction on our family. I was forced to undergo conversion three times over a two-year period being deprived of social contact and having my basic rights suppressed while being confined, monitored and violently beaten. It is no exaggeration to say that I was 'existing' without any regard for my basic rights.

In June 2014, I was again confined in a psychiatric ward with patients with psychological disabilities and had to endure coercive conversion from 'Pastor C', who is a religious swindler. I told 'Pastor C', “I've been brought and confined here by force and have no desire to receive coercive conversion. Let me go. If you proceed with the coercive conversion programme here, it's the same as agreeing with my situation.” Pastor C replied, “Yep, sue me! I can't let you go.”

My desperate plea to the Korean government and judiciary is to punish religious-swindling coercive conversion pastors as soon as possible so that human rights in the Republic of Korea can be upheld and respected and victims' hurts appeased.

“Conversion pastor spouted lies
Conversion programme founded on lies
Loving husband suddenly turned violent
Domestic violence followed failed conversion attempt
Forced hospital admission following report from the child
Conversion pastors refuse to accept responsibility for their actions”

[Cheonji Ilbo = Reporter Kang Soo-kyung] Practising one's faith at Shincheonji Church of Jesus does not lead to family breakdown. Yet so-called 'cult counselling experts' who belong to the established Church allege that affiliation to Shincheonji Church will lead to a complete breakdown of the family unit. This is because, from their perspective, congregants of Shincheonji Church must be 'converted'.

This is why there is deep worry among family members when their loved one refuses to consent to the coercive conversion programme and receive 'conversion counselling'. Due to the inculcation of lies, families are often filled with fear and hatred towards Shincheonji Church.

Families who fail to convince their loved one to undergo coercive conversion do not hesitate in resorting to violent means. Mrs. Soo-hyun Yang (pseudonym) of Buk district, Gwangju city underwent coercive conversion in 2004, but refused to be converted. She then became a victim of serious domestic abuse from her own husband.

What follows is a full account of Mrs. Yang's appeal.
=============================================================
Greetings.
As a citizen of the Republic of Korea, where basic freedoms including freedom of religion are supposedly guaranteed, I write this plea to express bitter hurt at what I have experienced and to call for restitution from the law.

In January 2004, a pastor from 'A Church' in Gwangju approached my husband, speaking slander and lies about Shincheonji Church - the church I attend - alleging that I had fallen into a cult. Soon after, the pastor of 'B Church', who visited the store that my husband was running, told my husband an outrageous lie and meted out a personal attack on Shincheonji Church.

The pastor of 'Church B' told my husband that if I continued attending Shincheonji Church, I would likely give away all our property and abandon our family.

Moreover, my husband was told that Shincheonji Church was connected to gang members who wore black suits to protect one another, and that this was in fact no ordinary church but a private organisation occupied by a den of thieves.

My husband was taken aback hearing these words and took desperate and immediate steps to protect our family and take me out of Shincheonji Church. He went online to find the contact details of a conversion pastor in Gwangju. Through careful scheming with the conversion pastor, my husband began making preparations in advance.

In September 2004, my husband suggested we go to see a pastor, who was his acquaintance, in the town of Gurye. Without knowing anything, I accepted and left my three young daughters at home. We got into the car at 6am and with my husband driving quickly so we could meet the pastor.

But we didn't arrive at Gurye. It was 'C Church' in Beolgyo, Jeonnam province. I realised then and there that my husband had deceived me in an attempt to get me to leave Shincheonji Church by meeting this conversion pastor named Kim.

I was furious that my husband had tricked me. I told him I wanted to go home, but he persisted that I consent to 'conversion counselling'. My will was violated and I was forced to undergo coercive conversion at 'C Church'.

Inside the so-called 'Education Centre' of Beolgyo’s 'C Church', pastor Kim and several associate pastors were waiting for us. Pastor Kim assured me that he would succeed in converting me, telling my husband, “Please leave this to us because I’m sure she will be converted if you leave your wife to us for just three days.” My husband made a promise to Pastor Kim without asking for my opinion, saying, "If she can be converted, the store will be closed for three days, so please do so."

I was worried about my three daughters I had left behind and was outraged that I had been brought here against my will. I told the conversion pastors, “I can’t take this. I'm going back home because I never agreed to an appointment with you all in the first instance.” My husband grabbed me by the arm to prevent me from leaving.

While confined, I was forced to receive 'conversion counselling' by pastor Kim from 8am-7pm (11 hours) without eating anything. My husband asked pastor Kim to cook me something, but Pastor Kim responded saying that I should continue to be 'counselled' - with all its threats and curses on Shincheonji Church - without food or a toilet break.

That evening, pastor Kim looked directly at my husband and, to my disgust, said to him, “She will not be an easy convert because she has been brainwashed far too much. This will be difficult. Let’s admit her into a psychiatric ward.” It was beyond understanding how this so-called 'pastor', who ascribed to a different denomination, could suggest I was psychotic and in need of institutionalisation at a psychiatric ward.

I underwent coercive conversion for just one day, yet our life before and after the ‘programme’ had drastically changed. Our once stable and healthy family unit had torn apart. My husband, who had little to no understanding of the Bible nor my faith, listened only to slanderous accusations spewed by the conversion pastor. No matter how hard I tried to engage in rational dialogue with him, he was furious that I hadn’t been converted.

Daily life with my newly changed husband post-conversion was, literally, 'living hell'. He paid no attention to what I said and maintained that pastor Kim's words were all true. He repeatedly called me 'Toray' ('crazy bi*ch,'), 'brainwashed' and even slapped me on the face and bruised me with punches on my sides and waist. My husband even threatened my children and I with a knife, saying we would all die together.

One day, the beating had been so severe that blood bled out of my forehead. My youngest daughter witnessed this and dialled 911 in a state of panic. I was finally admitted into hospital with police assistance.

My husband had taken hold of me by my head, swung me round - causing my neck to break – and injured my back, causing temporomandibular disorder. This is why I was subsequently hospitalised.

My temporomandibular joints are still distorted due to the aftereffects caused by the severity of my husband's violence, and it pains me now to open my mouth and speak. The conversion programme has come to an end, but the unspeakable physical and mental wounds inflicted by my husband are beyond words.

My husband was once a homely and trusting man who changed beyond imagination after meeting a conversion pastor whose ambition was to make money.

My husband is also a victim of this coercive conversion programme.

My husband doesn't know anything about the Bible but believes that a pastor would never lie. He took the conversion pastors' words as truth.

Depraved money-oriented conversion pastors who carry out conversion programmes for financial gain twist and distort the hearts and minds of loving and stable family homes in order to carry out acts of kidnap, imprisonment and divorce. They knowingly violate human rights, tearing families apart. By spreading lies and making personal attacks against Shincheonji Church, they instigate mistrust and hatred between different denominations.

I strongly urge the current government and media to quickly punish conversion pastors so that no one else will have to suffer the pain I did. I beg you to do something. Thank you.

On 11th October 2020, Cheonji Daily published an article in Korean entitled, “Confined on the 2nd floor of a Police Station to Stop me from Living my Life of Faith at Shincheonji Church. With a Crippled Arm, I Was Dragged Away for Coercive Conversion".

“Forced to take leave of absence and enlist in the military
Confined at the police station
Dragged to a forced conversion site”

[Chunji Ilbo = Reporter Kang Soo-kyung] A young man who had fallen and broken his arm was left confined at a police station where he was made to undergo forced conversion for the “crime” of being a believer at Shincheonji Church. He was threatened to apply for a leave of absence and enlist in the military.

The victim testifies that he had not committed any crime and was unjustly imprisoned at a police station. Terrified and vulnerable, he tried to escape, but couldn’t and had to undergo the ‘coercive conversion programme’ despite his broken arm.

This is the true story of Mr. Gyeong-jae Kim (pseudonym) of Ochi neighbourhood, Buk district, Gwangju city. Nine years ago, Mr. Kim was left scarred for life. What follows is a full account of Mr. Kim's appeal.

I studied at Chonnam National University in Gwangju, Jeonnam province, and am a Christian who serves God.

The reason I am writing this plea is that, although I have little understanding of the laws of the world, I must make the truth known about a horribly unjust situation.

My hometown is Namhae county, Gyeongnam province, where I was born and raised. At the time of the incident. I was majoring at Chonnam University, Gwangju.

Around 8pm on July 2nd 2011, I arrived back in my hometown of Namhae to spend my birthday with family. Unbeknown to me, my family had become recipients to all kinds of slander about Shincheonji Church - my place of worship - by a local ‘conversion pastor’ named Yoon Mo who maintained that it was a terrible place to belong. Acting upon pastor Yoon’s deceptive counsel, my family had completed all preparations for me to undergo coercive conversion.

Suspecting nothing untoward, I returned home to find two men who I had never met before, threatening me to take a leave of absence from work and enlist in the military.

Then at around midnight, two police officers stormed into our house and dragged me to the police station without giving me any reason. I was held there against my will on the second floor of Namhae Central Police Station. I was terrified throughout this process and jumped out of the second floor, severely damaging my back and arm.

I had major surgery with dozens of metal implants inserted into my arm. Yet my arm was broken and I was unable to extend it. I was left disabled.

Following initial surgery at Gyeongnam Namhae Hospital, the metal implants protruded from my elbow and the water continued to flow. Although being in great pain, no one cared, and under the direction of a conversion pastor I was dragged off to a secluded location called Jeonnam Mo Training Center where I was forced to undergo the profit-making coercive conversion programme conducted by pastor Yoon.

I was imprisoned, deprived of freedom to communicate with the outside world and forced to sign a consent form drafted for me. Without doing so, there would have been no hope of escape. As I would later learn, other like victims had suffered in exactly the same way.

The pain was unbearable and I had to find a way to flee so I pretended to accept ‘conversion counselling’ and was moved to a new education centre belonging to ‘A Church’ in Gwangju, which pastor Yoon heads. It was Yoon who had instructed my family to secure a studio near ‘A Church’.

I appealed to the legal system and declared all damages and injuries incurred, but was told that the evidence was insufficient. All the perpetrators got away scot-free. It’s beyond my understanding how this was not deemed a criminal matter. I was, in other words, threatened and forced to do something against my will in front of my family. Yet even the police had joined forces to mobilise public power for personal use, using public property and spaces to arrest me (the plaintiff) and confine me to the second floor of a police station. Not only had I seriously injured myself in my attempts to flee for my own life, but I remained confined for a considerable period of time thereafter. I refuse to accept the current condition of the Korean legal system, which failed to deem acts such as hiding my location from fellow church friends who were in search of me as unlawful.

Indeed if this were not a criminal issue, why did the local police department and station even apologise for their behaviour following this incident? They came to the church I attend, apologised for their unlawful handling of the case and asked to be pardoned. It is a complete contradiction.

In the past, there was a case involving a woman who was raped, murdered and diced who would have lived had it not been for the careless response by police who received a report. Another case involved a husband who reported his wife as a missing person and prone to suicide. The husband even disclosed her likely location to police but they failed to carry out an investigation. In the end, his wife took her own life. It’s not untrue to say that her death was due to police negligence.

Although the abovementioned case is rare, it is hard to fathom how the prosecution could have failed to cross-check the police officer's investigative report, and how the officer was then able to raise the case to a higher level falling directly under his supervision, give his own opinion and dismiss the case. It is utterly incomprehensible.

Even now, conversion pastor Yoon is using the conversion programme to make a name for himself, using ‘religion’ as means to carry out coercive conversion and manipulate families to their own destruction while he evades the laws of the world.

How long will these criminals deceive their own conscience and mock the laws of this country and of heaven? The truth will undoubtedly be revealed one day.

2000 years ago, leading religious and worldly authorities became one and charged God’s Son and disciples in court, condemning them as ‘heretics’ and ultimately killing them. God has recorded this fact in the Bible yet their actions have not changed since then. Surely those who condemned and killed the Son of God through the laws of this world would not have imagined their actions would be recorded in the Bible and made clear for us to see today.

I am distraught that the human rights of law-abiding Koreans are brutally violated simply because of thoughts and religious beliefs that differ from the Church with its vested interests. My sincere plea is for the truth to be revealed through a thorough and impartial investigation. Please carefully review the case in question and verify whether there are any incomplete investigations or unlawful judgments so that, as an unwilling victim, I can find hope in our judicial system.
