“It was good to talk to Shincheonji Volunteer Group members and to see branch members who had difficulty moving around as well.”
These are the words of Eun-hee Choi (64, female, Daegu City), a member of the Dalseo-District branch of the Association of Persons with Disabilities and beneficiary, who attended the 'Gimcheon Park Visit' programme organised by the Daegu branch of Shincheonji Volunteer Group on 21st June.
The activity was held as part of the 'Pinky Promise' programme.
Despite being the smallest of the five fingers, the little finger is an essential part of the hand and body. Likewise, people of disability are citizens who play an equally important role in society. 'Pinky Promise', therefore, is designed to break down the walls of prejudice against people of disability, establish open channels of communication and put love for one's neighbour into practice.
On that day, Woon-cheol Jeong, head of the Dalseo-District branch of the Association of Persons with Disabilities, urged, “Let’s all put aside our prejudices and approach and communicate with one another.”
In response, the Daegu volunteer group provided a space for people with disabilities and volunteers to engage in a cultural activity and share their hearts and cultivate emotions. 15 members of the volunteer group guided 15 participants of the Dalseo-District branch on a one-on-one basis and helped them get on and off an electric Ferris wheel in the park. They also rode the ‘Happy Car’ to the Peace Tower in Gimcheon City, where they visited the exhibition hall on the first floor of the Peace Tower.
Sang-tae Lee, deputy director of the Daegu branch, said, “This volunteer service was carried out with the purpose of breaking down the walls that divide people of disability and people without and to unite as one,” and added, “I hope that, together, we can create a world without prejudice.”
Meanwhile, the 'Pinky Promise' campaign is a regular service provided by Shincheonji Volunteer Group throughout South Korea.
