“I participated in the Korean War as a student soldier and suffered a lot. I've always maintained the belief that war should never reoccur, so I am grateful that the volunteer group has organised a peace event like this.”
These are the words of Gwang-su Kim (91, male), who participated in the 'Peace Keeper' campaign hosted by the Chuncheon branch of Shincheonji Volunteer Group at Chuncheon City's Waterside Park on the 8th and 9th June.
The 'Peace Keeper' campaign, a traditional event held every year during Patriots and Veterans Month (June) to commemorate the June 25th Battle of Chuncheon, is purposed to convey gratitude to veterans' families for the sacrifice defending the country of Korea and to emphasise the pressing need for a culture of global peace in today's turbulent world.
The two-day event included small hand-held Taegeukgi (Korean national flag) and calligraphy fans delivered to about 100 people, including veterans of the Korean War and family members, and an experience booth set up for citizens to write a thank-you postcard.
A citizen who attended with his grandchild that day said, “I was able to share the meaning of love for the country by showing and explaining the Taegeukgi to my child.” He added, “If there is an event like this in the future, I want to actively participate and promote it.”
Dong-woo Kim, deputy director of the Chuncheon branch, said, “We are able to enjoy the freedom we have today because of the precious sacrifice and dedication of the Korean War veterans for the country,” and added, “We will continue to carry out meaningful activities to instil in our descendants the importance of love for the country and peace.”
Meanwhile, the Battle of Chuncheon marked the beginnings of the Korean War and inflicted serious damage on the adversary, slowing their advance south for as many as six days, and providing significant assistance to the Republic of Korea Army and UN forces.
