Earth Day was established in 1970 to call on governments, communities, and businesses to take action for nature conservation and a healthier Earth.
To mark 54th Earth Day, Shincheonji Volunteer Group's Gwangju Branch held a campaign to promote carbon neutrality to inform citizens of the dangers of abnormal climate issues and to encourage the practice of carbon neutrality on the 28th of April.
This event raised awareness of the dangers of abnormal weather through a photo exhibition and also incorporated a campaign to raise awareness of people of disability in commemoration of the Day of Disabled People (April 20th).
With regards to the environment, the 'Salvage Used Clothes' booth enabled citizens to exchange used clothes with each other to reduce water consumption and carbon emissions generated during the process of washing and dyeing clothes. In addition, the Gwangju branch of the Shincheonji Volunteer Group is using the profits earned from collecting used clothes to expand portable convenience facilities for people of disability.
Local resident Mr. Yeop Kim, who experienced the booth as a volunteer that day, said, “I could relate to the purpose of this event, so I participated,” and added, “If we pay more attention to environmental issues such as abnormal weather conditions and try to take action, we will be able to make the Earth healthier.”
