“There was so much litter, amounting to several truck-loads worth. My clothes were soaked with sweat, but I didn’t feel it because of the support of the residents.”
These are the words of Jeong-ae Seok, a volunteer from the Gangdong branch of Shincheonji Volunteer Group, who participated in the housing environmental improvement service.
On the 20th May, at the urgent request of the head of Dunchon 2-neighbourhood, Gangdong District, Seoul, 33 volunteers of the Gangdong branch of Shincheonji Volunteer Group visited a resident's home and provided volunteer services to improve the residential environment.
The waste that had accumulated both inside and outside the home of a resident, whose obsession with hoarding worsened following a dementia diagnosis three months ago, amounted to 3.5 tonnes.
Volunteer Joo-Hyeon Yoo, who participated in the volunteer work, said, “It was not easy to throw away the sheer amount of litter that had accumulated in the house, but I was proud to see it organised and cleaned in a short time because we all worked together. I felt like the worries and concerns that had accumulated in my mind also cleared away.”
Meanwhile, Shincheonji Volunteer Group continues to carry out various volunteer activities every month, such as the 'Love Your Country, Share Peace' to commemorate war veterans who defended Korea and to promote the importance of peace, 'More is Better', which is a companion plant-sharing service for emotional wellbeing, and 'Beautiful Seniors' to support a healthy and happy retirement for the elderly.
