A campaign is underway to revive the commercial district in Gwacheon, Gyeonggi province, which has been in a recession since COVID-19.
Since last May, Shincheonji Gwacheon Church (John Tribe) of Shincheonji Church of Jesus, the Temple of the Tabernacle of the Testimony has designated the fourth weekend of every month as 'Consumer Day', a campaign to revitalise the local economy, and is encouraging its congregation to participate.
In particular, this month, the 24th to 27th was designated as the campaign period, and Friday and Monday before and after the weekend were also included to allow more people to participate as well as disperse the number of people.
Shincheonji Gwacheon Church encouraged believers to actively use restaurants and shopping stores in the area, such as sharing a list of good restaurants during the campaign and encouraging them to visit even less-visited shopping malls.
A local owner of a Japanese restaurant said, “There were so many customers that we couldn’t accommodate all of them,” and, “I was so busy that I didn’t have enough hands, so I was grateful (to the church members) for helping me organise the tables, serve food and do many other things.”
An official from Shincheonji Gwacheon Church said, “It is an economically difficult time, but I hope we can be of some help to small business owners,” and added, “We will continue to fulfil our role as a church that puts love for the region into practice and creates a co-prosperous society.”
Meanwhile, the Consumer Day campaign was designed to help revitalise the Gwacheon area's commercial district and support small business owners. According to Shincheonji Gwacheon Church, about 5000 of its congregation participate in Consumer Day every month.
