What is the basis for one's belief in Jesus as the Christ?
2000 years ago at the time of the first coming, the people of Israel and their pastors (Pharisees, Sadduccees and Teachers of the Law) condemned Jesus as a heretic. But Jesus’ twelve disciples were convinced that Jesus was the Christ and the Son of God. What was the basis of their belief?
Prophecies about Jesus were written in the Old Testament and were fulfilled according to these promises. "Prophecy" is like a blueprint for what will be fulfilled in the future and serve as proof of its reality (John 14:29).
Through the fulfilment of Old Testament prophecy, the twelve disciples and early Christians came to believe in a living and active God. After all, anyone can prophesy, but not everyone can fulfil that prophecy. God always fulfils what He has promised - even hundreds or thousands of years later - so that we can see and believe.
God prophesied about a shepherd to come throughout the Old Testament, and according to this promise Jesus came. Jesus came according to the Bible, lived his life according to the Bible, died according to the Bible and resurrected according to the Bible, as recorded in 1Cor15:3–4:-
For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures,
Hundreds of prophecies through the Old Testament Law of Moses, Psalms and writings of the Prophets were all evidence that pointed to Jesus (Luke24:44). This is why Jesus is the Christ.
Jesus Christ, who came according to the Bible, had Apostle John record the Book of Revelation of the New Testament. The Book of Revelation is a book of prophecy which foretells the coming of a promised temple, promised theology (revelation) and promised pastor, which all appear when the book of Revelation is fulfilled.
Do you know about this promised pastor? Do you know about the pastor Jesus promised to send as his messenger for the churches according to Revelation 22:16?
"I, Jesus, have sent my angel to give you this testimony for the churches. I am the Root and the Offspring of David, and the bright Morning Star."
