John Tribe of Shincheonji Church of Jesus hosted an event for local residents outside their Changwon branch celebrating the 100th anniversary of the March 1st Independence Movement. This was one of many events held throughout the Republic of Korea commemorating the sacrifice of freedom fighters who gave up their lives in pursuit of liberation from oppressive Japanese occupiers in 1919.
Donning white and black outfits, Shincheonji Church volunteers distributed printed copies of the 1919 'Declaration of Independence' to neighbouring residents outside their church. This was a statement announcing that Korea would no longer tolerate Japanese rule. It was violently quashed by the Japanese authorities and it wasn't until nearly thirty years later when Korea was liberated from the Japanese empire after their defeat in World War Two. One resident said, "As I have not yet properly read the 1919 Declaration of Independence, Shincheonji Church helped make this known. Therefore, I feel like I was able to partake in something meaningful today".
Shincheonji Church's gratitude for the sacrifice made by freedom fighters was expressed by one of its representatives, who said, "Although a small campaign, we were able to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the March 1st Independence Movement with local residents. We will continue to hold large and small-scale events in appreciation of the sacrifice and love of the country."
