Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of
God unless they are born of water and the Spirit.” (John
3:5)
Jesus
Christ spoke these words 2000 years ago. What does it mean to be born of
water and the Spirit?
Then
the Lord God formed a man from
the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man
became a living being (Genesis 2:7)
According to Genesis 2:7, God formed
Adam out of the dust of the ground and breathed into him the breath of life. In
other words, God created Adam as a physical being and then gave him His spirit.
Because God’s spirit dwelled with Adam, Adam had eternal life. However, Adam broke
God’s covenant by (figuratively) eating the fruit of the tree of the knowledge
of good and evil, which God forbade him to eat (Genesis 3). Consequently, God - who is spirit (John 4:24) - left Adam and all creation. Without
the spirit of God, Adam’s flesh could only sustain itself for a period of time
before it returned to the dust. Adam eventually died and all creation has been subject to death.
Since the time of Adam’s betrayal, God’s will
has been to re-connect with people. Both water and spirit refer to the
word of God (Deuteronomy 32:2; John 6:63), meaning that God has been trying to give people His
word in every generation. But people always broke the
covenant - refusing to listen to God's word - and betrayed God.
When Jesus spoke the above words to religious leaders of the Jewish world 2000
years ago, he was planting God’s seed into man. This seed, which is also the word of God
(Luke 8:11), was planted to help people gain an understanding of His Word. So
their spirit became living.
In conclusion, it is only through the word of God - the spirit, water and seed - that man's spirit can receive life. This new creation will not return to the dust, but their flesh and spirit will resurrect and enter heaven. In order to dwell with God, all people must be re-born into the seed of God and live in the paradise of heaven for eternity.
